How long does it take to finish a piece?
It's hard to say because I always have two or three going at one time. I'd guess about three weeks give or take. It depends on how detailed it has also.
Do You Like Pie?
Yes
What Materials Do You Use?
I mainly use scavenged materials for my work. I start off with drift wood from the river. After the wood has been banging arould in the Ohio for a few months, it makes it nice and soft for carving. Also, it strips the bark off for me. I rough out the bodies with hand tools. The heads and arms are often carved separately and added at the end.
Then I begin to cover the surface with metal. I have used recycled ceiling tin, old candy tins, and fallen rain gutters. Really, anything I can get my hands on that is thin enought to bend with my fingers. The metal is then cut into small squares and nailed the the wooden figure. Acrylic paint is used to surface the heads and hands.
Are you a folk artist or are you self taught ?
I am not a folk artist and am not self taught.
What's up with your name?
Blame it on my German Heritage.I don't know what the hell they were thinking. I found this comment about me on the blog www.allthingschristie.com that really made me laugh. "While he may have been born into an unfortunate name, he still managed to make it out of high school in one piece to become one hell of an artist" Thanks for the kind words Christie.
Where are you from ?
I currently live in Evansville, Indiana where I was born and raised. Evansville sits in the bottom south of the state right on the Ohio river. Well, what can I say...at least the rent is cheap.
